Joelle Sleiman tiene 21 años de edad y vive en Marjeyoun, en el sur de Líbano. Su familia —es decir, sus padres y dos hermanos menores— logró sobrevivir a la prolongada guerra civil sin mayores inci-dentes. Pero el 16 de agosto de 2001 los golpeó la tragedia: los dos varones, Nicolás, de 17 años, y Andy, de 16 años, resultaron víctimas de una colisión.
A Nicolás le gustaban mucho los automóviles y la velocidad. Debido a la deficiente aplicación de las normas de tránsito en la zona, nada le impidió salir de su casa manejando muy velozmente un au-tomóvil sin el permiso de conducción. No escuchó los ruegos de sus padres para que no usara el auto.
Esa noche terrible, la madre de Joelle se quedó hasta tarde mirando la televisión, mientras esperaba que regresaran los muchachos. En cambio, le llegó por ese medio la noticia del choque. Joelle y sus padres se dirigieron precipitadamente al hospital, donde hallaron a Andy muerto y a Nicolás muy
grave, pues no respondía al tratamiento. Con dificultad lograron hacer trasladar a Nicolás a un hospital de Beirut, donde permaneció en coma.
En el mismo día del funeral de Andy, se le comunicó al padre que las perspectivas de Nicolás no eran nada prometedoras. La familia pasó la semana siguiente rezando por un milagro, pero nada se pudo hacer. Nicolás murió una semana después que su hermano. Tiempo después se supo que los muchachos se estrellaron contra una pared tratando de evitar que los embistiera un vehículo a contramano que manejaba un conductor no identificado.
Cuando Joelle habla con otros adolescentes sobre el exceso de velocidad, ellos a veces le dicen: “somos nosotros los que decidimos si queremos matarnos”. Se olvidan, señala Joelle, que no serían ellos
los únicos afectados, pues tienen padre, madre, hermanos, hermanas y amigos íntimos que los quieren. También deberían pensar en eso.
La pérdida de sus dos hermanos ha cambiado por completo la vida de Joelle: ahora vive sola con sus padres. Se incorporó a la Youth Association for Social Awareness, YASA (Asociación de Jóvenes
para la Concienciación Social), que la ha ayudado a sobrellevar su dolor interno. Si bien no recuperará a sus hermanos, dice Joelle que al menos puede ayudar a evitarles a las hermanas de otros jóvenes
conductores un trance semejante. Se siente orgullosa de su trabajo en la YASA, que cumple pensando siempre en Andy y Nicolás.

es de una madre que en un accidente de trafico, fue envestida por otro coche cuyo conductor dío positivo... uy positivo en alcohol....

sigue trabajando... como yo, para evitar que otras personas, sientan el dolor que tu tienes ahora...
