Just prior to 3:45 p.m., emergency crews responded to a crash at the intersection of Highway 7 and 5 St. West (also known as Sundance Trail).
According to RCMP, a Ford pickup truck was travelling westbound on Highway 7 when the driver of a Volvo car, travelling on 5 St., attempted to enter westbound traffic in front of the truck.
The driver of the pickup truck was unable to stop his vehicle and the truck struck the car.
The impact of the collision ejected the driver of the Volvo, an unidentified 88-year-old man, from his vehicle.
EMS officials say the Volvo driver was in critical, life threatening condition. Air ambulance services were requested but no helicopters were available at the time. The driver was transported by ground ambulance to the South Health Campus where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Volvo passenger, a 67-year-old man, was transported by EMS to the Foothills Hospital where he remains in stable condition.
RCMP officers do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.
The pickup truck driver was not injured in the crash.
