A southern Alberta woman had luck on her side on Tuesday and escaped serious injury after she was hit by a semi tractor-trailer unit while riding her scooter across a Lethbridge street.

Police say the 85-year-old woman was riding a mobility aid westbound on a sidewalk along 5 Avenue North at about 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday and entered the intersection against the crossing signal.

She collided with a semi tractor-trailer unit that was turning from 13 Street onto eastbound 5 Avenue South.

Police say that the woman went under the truck and the driver stopped the vehicle immediately.

The woman suffered head injuries and abrasions and was transported to hospital in non-life-threatening condition.

The woman is expected to be released from hospital later on Tuesday.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and say no charges are being considered.
