Safe Towing Tips

Safe Towing Tips

If you are learner driver, or a learner or a new motorcycle rider, you are not allowed to tow any vehicle or trailer. Towing a trailer is not easy and can be dangerous and requires more knowledge and skill than normal driving.

Rules for towing

  • You must not go faster than 80km/h if you are towing a trailer or another vehicle which weighs more than 750 kg with its load.
  •  You must not tow more than one trailer or one other vehicle.
  •  If you are driving a car make sure the loaded trailer or caravan you are towing does not weigh more than the unloaded vehicle you are driving.
  •  If you are driving a vehicle registered as a tuck make sure the loaded trailer or caravan you are towing does not weigh more than two-thirds of the GVM/ aggregate weight of the vehicle you are driving. (See definitions for aggregate weight.)
  •  If you are a driver with a provisional car license, you must not low a trailer with an unloaded weight of 250 kg or more.
  •  If you are driving in a road without street lights and you are towing a caravan, you must drive at least 60 meters behind heavy vehicles or other vehicles towing caravans unless you are overtaking.
  •  You most secure a caravan or trailer to your vehicle with a strong coupling. There must also be safety chain or wire rope attached in case the coupling breaks.

Loading trailers
Loads should be kept as low and close to the axle as possible with about two thirds of weight over and in front of the wheels (that is, towards the tow bar).

To help stop the trailer swaying, large masses should be placed in the center of the trailer.
All loads must be properly tied to trailers.

What to do when towing

Generally:

  •  Towing is more stressful than normal driving and more likely to cause tiredness. On long trips plan more rest stops and shorter traveling days.
  •  Allow for the extra length and width of trailers and their tendency to cut-it on corners and curves.
  •  Do not apply brakes hard when traveling around a curve (unless absolutely necessary), particularly when the road is wet and slippery. If you brake heavily the trailer may jackknife.
  •  Reversing a trailer can be quite difficult and take practice. With large trailers and caravans, it is a good idea to have someone watching and direction you when you are reversing.
  •  As a trailer reducing the following vehicle’s performance, you should avoid overtaking.
  •  Allow longer distances when joining traffic or braking.
  •  To minimize trailer sway, avoid sudden changes of lane or direction.
  •  Check if the trailer is fitted with brakes. Do not tow a trailer unless the brakes are adjusted and working correctly.
  •  Look further ahead than usual to see traffic and road conditions.

When towing a car

  •  The space between the vehicles must not be more than 4 meters.
  •  A licensed and experienced person must stay in the towed car to control it.
  •  At night, both cars must have lights on.
  •  A red flag or something like it should be hung or any chain, rope or wire rope used for towing.

Checks during journeys

Soon after starting each day’s traveling with the trailer, stop and check:

  • Coupling and safety chains, to make sure these are still properly fastened.
  • Brakes and wheel-bearings, make sure that there are not overheating.
  • Lighting, to make sure all lights are still working
  • Tires, to make sure they still have the correct pressure and are not rubbing.
  • Security of any load, doors, hatches and covers.
  •  You should do these checks every two or three hours at least.
