Forklift Operator's Daily Checklist

Forklift Operator's Daily Checklist

By HoracioGarcia, eHow Contributor
updated: September 11, 2010

1.  The operator must inspect the forklift every day before operation
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that a forklift operator inspect and fill out a daily inspection checklist before operating the vehicle. The operator's daily checklist may vary from employer to employer, but most daily checklists have many items in common. This checklist must be filled out by the operator and kept on file in the foreman's office or maintenance department.

General Information
The daily checklist has general information that must be filled out by the operator before the daily inspection can begin. This information includes name of the company, name of the forklift operator performing the daily checklist, forklift identification number, time of the inspection, the hours on the meters and the date of the daily checklist.

Visual Inspection
The forklift operator's daily checklist is generally broken up into categories and list what must be inspected under that category. The first part of the daily checklist list is the visual inspection. The forklift operator must walk around the forklift and inspect for any leaks or damage. This inspection includes, but is not limited to, the fluid levels, hose conditions, fork damage, tires and wheels as well as any other moving part.

Operational Inspection
Once the forklift operator has visually inspected the vehicle, the checklist includes an operational inspection. The operator enters the cab of the forklift and starts the vehicle to perform this part of the checklist. The operator must inspect all the gauges and run through all the controls' cycles. This ensures that the forklift is working correctly before the operator uses it.

Safety Inspection
All forklifts are required to have safety items and devices located on the vehicle. The operator's daily checklist must have a category for checking these safety devices. Items such as a working fire extinguisher, overhead protection device, warning signals, horns and all lights must be working properly. All of these safety devices must be operational and recorded as operational on the daily checklist before the forklift operator can begin working with the industrial truck.
