P: ¿Por qué hay tantos jóvenes implicados en accidentes de tránsito?
R: Son varios los motivos que hacen que los jóvenes corran mayor riesgo de sufrir traumatismos causados por el tránsito:
• la red vial está planificada sin tener suficientemente en cuenta sus necesidades específicas;
• sus características físicas y de desarrollo (por ejemplo, el pequeño tamaño de los niños) aumentan su riesgo;
• su tendencia a adoptar comportamientos de riesgo y la presión de los compañeros, especialmente entre los adolescentes, y
• otros factores de riesgo tales como el exceso de velocidad, la conducción bajo los efectos del alcohol o el hecho de no usar el caso o el cinturón de seguridad.


A nivel mundial, los accidentes de tránsito son la principal causa de muerte en el grupo de 10 a 24 años. Cada año mueren unos 400 000 jóvenes menores de 25 años en las carreteras de todo el mundo: un promedio de 1049 al día. La mayoría de esas muertes se producen en países de ingresos bajos y medianos, y entre los usuarios más vulnerables de la red vial: los peatones, los ciclistas, los motociclistas y los usuarios del transporte público.
Los accidentes de tránsito son prevenibles. Hay una serie de intervenciones que han demostrado ser eficaces para atenuar esos factores de riesgo y reducir los accidentes de tránsito entre los jóvenes, tales como la separación de los diferentes tipos de usuarios de la red vial, la reducción de la velocidad y de la tasa de alcoholemia permisible, o los permisos de conducir graduales para los conductores noveles.
Estas medidas se analizan detalladamente en un nuevo documento titulado Los jóvenes y la seguridad vial, que publicará la OMS con motivo de la Primera Semana Mundial de las Naciones Unidas para la Seguridad Vial (23 a 29 de abril de 2007). El principal evento de la semana será la Asamblea Mundial de la Juventud por la Seguridad Vial, que tendrá lugar en el Palais des Nations, en Ginebra, y en la que se reunirán más de 100 jóvenes "embajadores" para debatir temas relacionados con la seguridad vial y adoptar una Declaración de la juventud por la seguridad vial.
