Dear Julio,
First, thank God that you did not killed. I am an American- Lebanese who lived here for a long time and never stopped returning throughout the war period. At times was forced to drive crazy or be run off the road ! But never made illegal turns or created my own parking solution!
The Lebanese have always been attracted to speed and fast cars. In the past, road rallies were very popular. Unfortunately, so much has changed and too many people lack or refuse to respect laws of any kind, driving laws in particular. It is puzzling why so many drivers are ignorant intentionally or selfish or just plain stupid and careless on the road. I cannot understand it? when they visit the western world they abide by the rules and if they do not.... end up fined or jailed!
Everyone complains and they all feel terrorized by the hazards of driving here. Yet no one has a solution. No one knows why this situation exists. We all have theories. I have tried to rationalize it with multiple excuses which are useless efforts on my part. Simply, new traffic rules need to be implemented and enforced. (good luck with this happening in my lifetime-:). Quite a hard sell when most ignore the authorities and the police have no power or respect from the drivers.
I honestly believe that the style of driving that so many Lebanese are so proud of has been a deterent for Lebanon regaining its "place to visit status". Beautiful beaches and great skiiing are not enough. Citizens need to feel safe to go out on the road! as a driver or a passenger..
As a grandmother, a skillful driver who got her license here in 1969, I refuse to bring some of my grandchildren for a visit. How can I ressure my daughter that her children will not be killed riding around on these roads with the current dangerous road behavior? My being a safe driver does not gurarantee their safety. So sad that these children will not learn their heritage or the beauty of this country.
Well keep the faith that it will change and one day some influential leader will at least try to change things. You as a young man can be a peaceful acitivist for" new traffic laws" or at leaset the implementation of the current laws".. Just maybe there are other young drivers who agree with you.
Good luck, Patricia
