One week after a young girl succumbed to injuries she suffered after a van crashed into her classroom in St. Paul, her family is thanking supporters.
On Thursday, October 25, a minivan crashed into the Grade 6 classroom at Racette Junior High School in St. Paul – injuring a total of eight students, three of whom had to be airlifted to hospital in Edmonton.
One of those students, Megan Wolitski, 11, succumbed to her injuries the next day.
In the days following her death, the community of St. Paul has mourned the loss of the young girl.
On Friday, a spokesperson for Megan’s family released the following statement:
"Megan Alyssa Wolitski passed away one week ago today. The support we have received has been incredible. We would like to thank the first responders, the St. Paul Hospital, the Stollery Children’s Hospital and RCMP for their care and compassion.
"We would also like to thank all Canadians for their kind words and prayers. They have provided comfort to the family.
"Finally, we would like to thank the Town of St. Paul for their support and generosity. We are honoured to live in such an amazing community."
Earlier this week, the family announced a celebration of Megan’s life had been planned for Friday evening, with her funeral taking place on Saturday.
A Facebook page has been set up by the family in Megan’s memory, and the St. Paul Servus Credit Union has set up the “Megan Wolitski Memorial Fund” to help the family, and support a scholarship in her honour.
