RCMP are investigating, and believe driver error may be to blame, in a fatal collision on the highway near Drayton Valley Thursday night.

Police said the crash happened on Highway 22 just before 6 p.m. when two vehicles collided head-on, before a semi-truck was hit.

Investigators said one car crossed the centre line, and hit another oncoming vehicle, then a semi-truck.

It’s alleged the semi hit both vehicles before coming to a stop.

The driver of the first vehicle was identified by police as 74-year-old Ronald Clayton Archer, and he died in the crash – his granddaughter was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton.

RCMP said her condition is not known.

The driver of the other car involved was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries as well.

The semi-truck driver was not hurt.

Investigators said road conditions were good at the time, and alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the crash.

RCMP said charges are not expected to be laid at this point in the investigation.
