Police have determined that a serious crash on Blackfoot Trail on Thursday evening was a result of driver error.

Five on-duty Calgary Police officers were sent to hospital after they were hit by another car on Blackfoot Trail.

At about 6:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of Blackfoot Trail and 19 St. S.E. for reports of a two vehicle crash.

Five on-duty police officers were westbound in a van on Blackfoot when it crashed into another vehicle that turned into its path.

“About the same time, a civilian vehicle, travelling eastbound, made a left turn across the path of that police van. There was a collision,” says Duty Inspector Jim Stinson. “The police van careened into a pole and two of the police officers in that van were seriously injured.”

All five officers and the driver of the pickup were taken to hospital.

They have since been released.

Investigators have found that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but have determined that driver error was at fault.

The investigation is ongoing.

There is no word on charges in the crash
