Driver arrested in connection to October crash which claimed three lives

A 47-year-old man is expected to face nine charges in connection to a fatal crash near the intersection of 17 Ave. and 39 St. S.W.
On October 30, 2013, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the driver of an eastbound 1997 Dodge Neon lost control of his vehicle and drove into the westbound lanes, where the Neon collided with an oncoming Jeep Cherokee. The impact of the crash sent the Neon careening into a concrete divider bordering the LRT tracks.
Two passengers in the Dodge Neon, a 32-year-old female and a 37-year-old male, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 35-year-old passenger in the car was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Neon was transported to hospital in critical condition but he has recovered from his injuries.
The occupants of the Jeep, four females between the ages of 47 and 85, were not seriously injured in the crash.
On Sunday February 23, 2014, officers arrested the driver of the Dodge Neon in connection to the events of October 30, 2013.
Joel Michael Matteson is expected to face the following charges:
- Three counts of Criminal Negligence Causing Death
- Three counts of Impaired Driving Causing Death
- Three counts of Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Concentration Greater than 80 mg of Alcohol in 100 ml of Blood Causing Death
A scheduled date for Matteson's next court appearance has not been released
