A seven-year-old child was transported to hospital in potentially life threatening condition after being struck by a SAAB sedan at the intersection of Kincora Glen Green and Kincora Glen Rd N.W.

The collision occurred at approximatley 4:00 p.m. shortly after the child exited from his school bus. The seven-year-old was attempting to cross the road to meet a family member when he was hit by the sedan.

"The bus had the yellow flashing lights activated and within the city you are allowed to pass a school bus within the city," explains Sgt. Joerg Gottschling. "We suspect the gentle man driving the SAAB was within the law."

'It serves as a good reminder to make sure children are aware of safe exiting of buses and both getting on and getting off. Extra caution around school buses is always advised regardless of the situation."

Police say there were 19 children on the bus and seven children were departing the bus at the location of the crash

According to EMS officials, the child was rushed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital but the nature of his injuries required his transfer to the Foothills Hospital.

The child's condition has been upgraded to serious but stable.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene following the crash and is being interviewed by police.
