One teenager is dead after losing control of his vehicle and striking a sign post in a Saturday night crash in the city’s southeast.

According to police, at approximately 11:15 p.m. a silver Acura Integra was travelling at a high rate of speed on southbound Blackfoot Trail between Heritage Dr. and Southland Dr. S.E. Witnesses say the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic and, while attempting to pass a slower moving vehicle, the Integra driver lost control of his car. The slippery road conditions caused the vehicle to spin towards the median where the driver’s side door collided with a sign post and the car careened a distance of six metres.

Emergency crews responded to the crash scene and pronounced the 19-year-old driver dead at the scene.

The passengers of the vehicle, three males between the ages of 15 and 17, were extricated from the wreckage and transported by ambulance to local hospitals in stable condition.

Police believe excessive speed was a factor in the fatal collision. Alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the crash.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

An investigation into the crash is underway. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit, 403-567-4000 , and reference Case #14105853
