Impatience on the part of drivers has been attributed as the major cause of accidents on Nigerian highways. The sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Katsina State, Mr Habu Dauda, particularly said the increase in road accidents in Kaduna State “is due to lack of patience among drivers.”
The sector commander also blamed drivers for their disregard for traffic rules and regulations, over-loading and over-speeding as other causes of accidents, especially among commercial vehicles.
He urged state government and local governments in the state to cooperate with the commission in its effort to reduce accidents along highways in the state.
Dauda said the commission would soon commence a sensitisation campaign in all the 34 local government areas in the state with a view to enlightening commercial vehicle drivers on the dangers associated with over-loading, over speeding and recklessness.
According to him, the state government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Commissioner for Works and Housing, Alhaji Musa Na-shuni, to collaborate with the commission to ensure the success of the campaign.
He said the commission would take the campaign to all nooks and crannies in the state, with a view to sensitising commercial vehicle drivers on the need to drive with care
