An Olympic biathlete is furious that the driver who forced him off the road while he was cycling is not facing more serious charges.

Robin Clegg suffered several broken bones and other injuries while on a training ride a few weeks ago west of Calgary.

Clegg says the charges set a bad precedent for cyclist safety.

“I thought charges should more severe. I’m disappointed with what they came up with and I’m also disappointed with the message it sends out to the cycling community and what that says about drivers and cyclists sharing the road. Ya extremely disappointed,” aid Clegg.

Clegg was on a training ride on September 30 with two friends when he says a road rage incident occurred.

He says that a driver raced up behind the group near the Springbank Airport and began honking the horn.

Clegg says the motorist then passed them but slowed and suddenly made a hard turn.

His friends avoided the Jeep but Clegg hit the vehicle.

Clegg is angry and says the driver is responsible for breaking his collar bone and his elbow.

The RCMP says everyone involved has been investigated and interviewed.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with failing to return to his lane safely after passing and will appear in court in Cochrane at the end of November.

“At this point in time we have to go with what we believe we can prove in court and that’s the appropriate charge at this point in time,” said RCMP Cpl. Gary Fedrau.

Clegg says the charge is nothing but a slap on the wrist.

The maximum penalty for the offence is a $115 fine.
