Police concerned over increase in hit and runs

 Michael Franklin, CTV Calgary

According to statistics from the Calgary Police, the city is on track to see an increase in the amount of hit and run incidents from last year.

So far, there have been three hit and run deaths in the city as compared to four in the whole year of 2012.

There have also been 72 injury crashes, and 3,588 property damage crashes this year where the driver or drivers left the scene without waiting for police.

A 76-year-old man was sent to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition, after he was hit by a pickup truck while getting into his parked car on 17 Avenue S.E.

On Wednesday evening, police say that a 76-year-old man who was struck by a pickup truck while crossing 17 Avenue is in serious, but stable, condition in hospital.

The man was struck by a black pickup at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

The driver fled the scene shortly after the crash.

Initially, the man was listed in critical condition and he was rushed to hospital by paramedics.

He was to undergo surgery on Wednesday but there is no other update on his condition at this time.

Police are still looking for the vehicle, a large black pickup truck, with damage to its right front-end.

David Torres, who was nearby when the crash occurred, said that people were telling him that a pedestrian was run over. "We just heard the sirens of the ambulance going by and there was a little section blocked off at first, but then they ended up blocking all of this off. They got it cleaned up pretty quick though."

Sgt. Darin Wood, with the CPS Traffic Unit, says the man was crossing from the northbound side to the southbound side of 17 Ave. at 9A St. S.E. when he was struck.

Wood says they're looking for witnesses to help them out.

"We have a witness, but we are looking for more witnesses who may have observed this and have yet to come forward to police."
