MASSTOWN, N.S. -- Two people are injured after their vehicle struck and killed a pair of stray horses on a Nova Scotia highway today.

RCMP Const. Dal Hutchinson says the vehicle was heading toward Truro on Highway 104 near Masstown Saturday morning when it hit the horses, swerved off the road into the woods and caught fire.

Hutchinson says the passenger was able to escape, but the driver was trapped and other motorists stopped to help.

He says the driver, who was seriously injured, was being pulled up the bank away from the vehicle when it exploded.

The driver and passenger were both taken to a nearby hospital.

A section of the highway has been closed as police investigate.

A third horse was located in a nearby field and has been returned to its owner.
