Ontario Wins Highway Safety Award
Ontario drivers recognize the importance of making our roadways as safe as possible for all travellers. And many road safety partners have worked closely with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario to promote safedriving practices and reduce highway fatalities. Along with that work, progressive legislation to deter impaired driving, counter distracted driving, and keep street racers off our streets has provided better enforcement tools that have resulted in a continuous reduction in collisions.
The work to reduce roadway fatalities was recognized in 2010 when Ontario was awarded the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ Highway Safety Award for the province with the greatest overall reduction in highway fatalities.
Ontario was recognized for its 19 percent drop in fatalities from 2007 to 2008 and the lowest fatality rate ever recorded in the province in 2008. Since 1980, Ontario’s fatality rate has declined by 77 percent. And while the number of vehicles on the road has increased two and half times since 1973, the number of road deaths has been cut by 68 percent (from 1,959 to 621 in 2008). We thank all our partners in road user safety for their dedication to keeping Ontario one of the safest jurisdictions in which to drive in North America.
